Ascension Collegiate

Ascension Collegiate is the High School Completion and Post-Secondary Preparation Program

of the Edmonton Catholic School District offered at St. Joseph High School.

Our staff of experienced educators has been carefully chosen because of their experience, training, and philosophy of education. The education program at Ascension is designed to create an adult learning environment within a larger Catholic school community.  The program at Ascension Collegiate is designed to foster in our students not only the skills needed in the job markets of the future, but also a commitment to life long learning.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

The staff and students of Ascension, like all other members of the St. Joseph community, strive to create a positive learning environment.  At all times, students are expected to respect the rights of other students and all staff.  These rights include:

·          A clean, safe, non-threatening environment

·          Courtesy at all times

·          Protection of private property

The following expectations govern students attending Ascension Collegiate:

·          Regular attendance and active participation is required of all students in courses delivered via classroom instruction or personalized self-paced learning.  Students must keep to their schedules and are subject to de-registration if attendance becomes a concern. Written warnings may be issued after 5 absences and again after 10 absences students may be withdrawn from class after 15 absences.

·          Punctual arrival to school and at all classes is required of all students.

·          Loitering in the school is a not an acceptable student practice.  If students are at school they should be in class or in a designated study area.  Fraternization with students in other programs (PSDL, K & E, etc.) should not take place.

·          Professional and modest dress suitable to any proper work place and productive learning environment is required of all students.

·          ID tags must be worn by all students at all times.

·          A smoke-free environment is a part of all Edmonton Catholic Schools and the surrounding property.  No smoking is permitted in the building or on school property.

·          Possession of alcohol or non-prescription drugs on school property is prohibited.  Students in possession of or under the influence of alcohol or non-prescription drugs will be suspended and possibly expelled from the school.

·          Skateboards, playing cards, electronic equipment (beepers, cell phones, and lasers) are not permitted in the school.

·          All parking is assigned parking.  Thus students are not allowed to park on school property.  Students choosing to park on school property will have their vehicles tagged and towed at the owner’s expense.

·          No lockers are available for student use.

·          Only registered students are permitted on school property.  Visitors from outside the school must report to the office and those who choose to disregard this policy may be charged with trespassing.

STUDENT EVALUATION

Within guidelines set by school policy, teachers are responsible for determining evaluation procedures to assess student achievement. Even though report cards are issued twice per semester, students need to monitor their own progress and communicate with teachers about achievement and evaluation concerns.  The school administration is responsible for ensuring evaluation procedures are accurate, fair, and consistent. Students who wish to appeal or question any evaluations they receive should communicate directly with the contact administrator responsible for the program.
